‘Reply 1974’ Hyundai Motor Company’s ‘Pony Coupe Concept’ Restoration Model Revealed
The ‘Pony Coupe’, which had disappeared into history, was reborn in perfect shape after 49 years.
Hyundai Motor Company announced on the 19th that it held a’Hyundai Renewion’ event in Lake Como, Italy on the 18th (local time) and unveiled the’Pony Coupe Concept’ restoration model for the first time.
Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Eui-sun Eui-sun and major former and current executives attended the event, looking back on Hyundai Motor Company’s past and introducing Hyundai Motor’s unchanging vision and direction for the future.
Chairman Chung Eui-sun said, “Despite the poor industrial environment in the 1970s, former chairman Chung Ju-young realized his vision of making an independent Korean automobile with the belief that ‘a country that can produce cars perfectly can produce anything, even aircraft.’” He said, “I express my sincere gratitude to everyone who played a decisive role in the success of Pony, including Italy and Korea.”
At the event, Hyundai Motor Company restored the original ‘Pony Coupe Concept’, which was shown at the 1974 Turin Motor Show in Italy.
The restoration was carried out in collaboration with legendary Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and his son Fabrizio Giugiaro. Giorgetto Giugiaro, founder and CEO of the Italian design company ‘GFG Style’, started with the design of the Pony and Pony Coupe, then designed a number of early Hyundai models such as the ‘Pony Excel’, ‘Presto’ and ‘Stella’.
The Pony Coupe concept was first unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in 1974 along with Hyundai’s first independently produced model, the Pony, and showed off its presence. At the time, it drew attention in the global finished car market with its future-oriented design, such as a wedge-shaped nose, circular headlamps, and geometric lines.
Since its first public release, the Pony Coupe concept has been developed as an export strategy model targeting advanced markets, and was actually developed right up to mass production.
However, the Pony Coupe concept is a model with Hyundai Motor Company’s innovative spirit that challenged the field of sports cars to advance into developed countries, and is evaluated as a physical legacy that inspires Hyundai Motor Company’s unique design philosophy today.
In fact, the high-performance hydrogen hybrid rolling lab ‘N Vision 74’, which was first unveiled in July of last year and received favorable reviews from global media and customers, was designed with inspiration from the Pony Coupe concept. Hyundai Motor Company displayed the Pony Coupe concept restoration model and the N Vision 74, which inherited the spirit of the Pony Coupe concept, side by side at the site.
